Garden Tips
Maintaining your garden is part of your tenancy responsibilities, but it can also be relaxing and satisfying.
To help you we have some tips from one of our ground maintenance specialists:
Don’t plant trees or let them establish from sapling. This is going to cause long term problems with the root systems going under the foundations.
However you can plant small species i.e. like certain types of Cherry Tree, Crab Apple Tree or Ornamental Field Maple and these can be planted in containers. Planting in containers will make future maintenance easier.
If you are thinking about removing a tree or hedge, you must notify LHP. We hold a list of all trees that are on our land, and some may be protected.
Don’t plant near drains! Check if there is a shared drain run or pipes before digging. You will be responsible and will be charged for any pipe damage.
Don’t plant climbing shrubs or ground cover such as Ivy, Lonicera or Russian Vine as they grow extremely rapidly, cover everything and are extremely hard to get rid of.
Planting hedges is permissible unless they could block a driver’s view or are restricted by an existing planning condition.
Don’t plant upright conifers such as Common Leylandii, Junipers, Cedar varieties as these grow very tall. This does not apply to dwarf conifers as they have small roots.
Slow down water drainage into the ground by using porous materials for open structures such as gravel on driveways and in the garden.
Please get permission for patios, ponds, driveways, fences, sheds or summer houses. Some alterations may also need planning permission.
